PERSONALITY Hailey is a pretty quiet kid. She doesn't usually raise her hand in class, but she usually knows the answer if she has to try. She doesn't really do mean, but she does a really, really dry sarcasm that can come off as pretty mean. There are lies we let ourselves believe, even though we know they're lies. Hailey isn't totally stupid. Obviously she knows what her mother did, sort of, and she sees how the other kids' parents look at her father sometimes, with fear or disgust or lust. That doesn't mean she acknowledges them, or ever will. Maybe she doesn't always do her homework to the best of her ability (or at all), but Hailey doesn't really get in a lot of trouble like some kids her age. It's not prudishness, she just doesn't want to disappoint her parents' high expectations of her. and they're pretty high, for all the crap her parents have gotten themselves into. Of course, her best friend is a cop's kid, so there's only so much they can get away with. Or, well, she was. BACKGROUND Hailey's household in Elkins was always a little tense. There wasn't so much open aggression as there was passive aggression from her mother and then fits of absence from her father. They finally divorced when she was 10, and initially her mother was given custody, since she seemed to be the most legally and financially stable of the two. It was Alison, though, who ended up in prison after the Conlex debacle, and Trent who ended up with Hailey. Hailey harbored a lot of resentment toward her mother for what she saw primarily as a mistake that had taken Alison away from her. She'd always been her father's little girl at heart, and those two years where it was only the two of them just served to cement their bond. When Alison was released early, Hailey was at first resistant to the idea of living with her mother at all, but with her father moving to the next town over it was that or start at a new school. Eventually, Hailey forgave her mother whatever crimes she was convicted for. Mostly. Hailey's spent nearly as much time at the Gages' house as she has her own. Bela Gage was her friend practically from kindergarten, and while both the Gage parents aren't exactly easy to get close to, they're at least like a distant aunt and uncle to her.
